According to In-Stat research, hospitals and healthcare expenditures for distributed antenna systems (DAS) installations will surpass Rs.17,857.14 crore ($4 billion) in 2015.

According to In-Stat, there are several compelling reasons why specific business verticals are utilising DAS, which is said to be a new powerful form of cellular infrastructure architecture. The first reason is the improved in-building signal quality for the end-user. The improved proximity of in-building antennas propagates better signal attenuation coming in through walls. Secondly, the radiated power coming from individual antennas is less than what would come from a microcell or macrocell base station. The last reason being that DAS installations can be camouflaged on roofs, walls, and light or utility poles.

"DAS is a technology that is roughly a decade old, but the new challenge to DAS contractors is to facilitate wideband signal channels," says Chris Kissel, Analyst. "Passive DAS networks are giving way to active DAS. Also DAS contractors are differentiating themselves by how many frequency bands their networks can support, the costs of the installations, and the types of applications their systems can integrate, which is especially true in the hospital and healthcare fields."

In-stat finds that by 2012, the TAM for all DAS deployments short of metro area outdoor DAS in North America will near Rs.8,928.57 crore ($2 billion) while the total global DAS revenue will surpass Rs.58,035.71 crore (13 billion) in 2015.

Also according to In-Stat, DAS revenue will increase 20 per cent or more over the forecast period in the Caribbean and Latin America. In Eastern Europe, the build-up for DAS though starting modestly will eventually grow to 3,897 new deployments in 2015. In-Stat indicates that in 2010, 15,000 new nodes were deployed in metro area outdoor DAS.
