Temperature sensor enables contactless measurement

Texas Instruments Inc. introduces the TMP006 digital temperature sensor offering a complete solution for contactless temperature measurement in portable consumer electronics using infrared technology that claims to be 95 per cent smaller than any other thermopile sensor.

The TMP006 digital temperature sensor provides manufacturers of mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets and notebooks, with the ability to accurately measure device case temperature using IR technology. This advancement over the current approach of approximating case temperature based on system temperature will enable system designers to optimise performance while providing a more comfortable user experience. The TMP006 can also be used to measure temperature outside the device, enabling new features and user applications. Samples of TMP006 are available at the TI website.

"The TMP006 solves customers need for advanced thermal management of processors, and allows for optimising system performance and safety even as processing power increases and form factors continue to shrink," said Steve Anderson, senior VP of TI's High Performance analogue business.

TI claims that the TMP006 is the most highly integrated device of its kind. It integrates an on-chip MEMS thermopile sensor, signal conditioning, a 16bit ADC, local temperature sensor and voltage references on a single 1.6mm x 1.6mm chip.

TMP006 integrates MEMS sensor with supporting analogue circuitry, reducing solution size 95 per cent compared to the competition. It uses only 240µA quiescent current and 1µA in shutdown mode that is said to be 90 per cent less power than competitive solutions. It includes I2C/SMBus digital interface and also supports a wide temperature range of -40°C to +125°C with an accuracy of ±0.5°C (typical) on the local sensor and accuracy of ±1°C (typical) for the passive IR sensor.

According to the company, TMP006 complements TI's extensive portfolio of industry leading ultra-small, low power consumption analogue and embedded processing products for portable applications, including battery management, interface, audio codecs and wireless connectivity devices.
