Mirrorless camera establishes ground

In-Stat forecasts that mirrorless cameras will generate Rs.3,683.04 crore ($825 million) in revenue in 2015.

Where in the world of digital still cameras (DSCs), there were basically two market segments from which to choose, either the expensive digital single lens reflex (DSLR) or the more affordable, not-as-sophisticated compact DSC, now a middle ground has been established two years ago with the introduction of the mirrorless camera.

"The mirrorless camera is essentially a DSLR without its reflex mirror, and it creates a price and quality bridge between the compact cameras and the DSLRs," says Stephanie Ethier, senior analyst. "Their advantages are smaller size, less weight, and smaller and lighter lenses. Although the mirrorless camera is still in its infancy as far as shipments are concerned, it will significantly impact the compact DSC market."

The recent research findings reports that in spite of innovations and improvements expected during the forecast period, the average bill of materials (BOM) cost of the compact DSC will actually decrease.

It also states that high-end DSLRs (including mirrorless) will grow faster in the APAC and EMEA regions. Because of this, semiconductor vendors will continue to take advantage of opportunities in sensors, image processors, inertial (MEMS) components, and microcontrollers.

In-Stat believes that by 2015, interchangeable lens DSLRs and various implementations of mirrorless cameras will account for 40 per cent of worldwide DSC revenues.

The new In-Stat research entitled, "Digital Still Cameras: Devices, Features, Lenses, Sensors, and Semiconductors," provides an analysis of the worldwide market for DSCs and an overview of the technology that drives it. The report covers DSCs by separating them into three categories: (1) compact DSCs, (2) DSLR cameras, and (3) mirrorless cameras.
