Renesas Electronics Corp. announces an SoC for designing camera applications with 16Mpixel resolution and full-HD video (1,920pixels × 1,080pixels) capture in mobile phones.

The CE150 features a two-lane MIPI CSI-2 high-speed output interface from the camera to the mobile phone application processor. In addition, advances in noise-reduction technology offer high-quality image processing when pairing the CE150 with a 16Mpixel CMOS image sensor.

The market for mobile phones with camera functionality has seen an increase annually in the number of high-end mobile phone handsets with camera resolutions of more than 5Mpixels and functions that rival those of DSCs. In 2012, models with camera resolutions over 5Mpixels are expected to account for about 80 per cent of total mobile phone shipments. Sales of mobile phone models with camera resolutions over 5Mpixels are predicted to exceed 40 crore units.

The key features of the CE150 include high-speed continuous shooting support at 15fps of high-quality photos with a resolution of 13Mpixels. It has a two-lane camera output interface conforming to MIPI CSI-2 standard that combines with software running on the host to transfer data using less power and with reduced EMI. It also offers superior photo quality via improved noise-reduction function and Renesas Electronics' exclusive Neo Clear Resolution technology. And it has the ability to implement multiple functions through firmware, such as anti-blurring stability enhancement, smile detection, and object tracking.

Renesas is offering the CE150 SoC as a camera system processor for high-end mobile phones and smart phones.

Samples of the CE150 SoC are available now, priced at Rs.1,834.65 ($40) per unit in sample quantities. Mass production is scheduled to begin in March 2011 and is expected to reach 10,00,000 units per month.
