Industrial Technologies Research Institute (ITRI), which created the humanoid robot Roppie, has tapped Energid Technologies Corp. to provide grasping and manipulation technology for the robot.

Energid, through a grant from the National Science Foundation, has developed new grasping software that reportedly gives robots a high degree of movement. "With extra degrees of freedom, humanoid robots can perform tasks in many ways," said James English, CTO of Energid Technologies. "Energid and ITRI will take advantage of this to enable advanced grasping with Roppie."

Roppie, with more than 20 degrees of freedom, is equipped with advanced touch sensors in its fingers, giving it the ability to perform various manipulation tasks, such as folding towels, linens, and certain types of clothing.
