Vishay Intertechnology Inc. said it has combined an IR emitter, PIN photo diode, ambient light detector, signal processing IC, and a 16bit ADC to create a fully integrated proximity and ambient light optical sensor in a tiny package.

Optical sensor

Packed in a leadless surface-mount package measuring just 3.95mm x 3.95mm x 0.75mm, the VCNL4000 supports an I2C bus communication interface offering simplified designs in various consumer and industrial applications such as smart phones, GPS units, and digital cameras, and industrial devices and displays.

The VCNL4000 can function as a proximity sensor for touch screen locking, as well as an integrated ambient light function for display/keypad contrast control and dimming, thereby helping save power due to its highly integrated nature.

The sensor offers 16bit effective resolution for proximity detection while its programmable LED drive current from 10mA to 200mA (in 10 mA steps) allows distances up to 200mm. Signal modulation enables "excellent" ambient light suppression.

Vishay Intertechnology said the built-in ambient light PIN photo diode's sensitivity is close to that of the human eye, with a 16bit dynamic range for ambient light detection from 0.33lux to 22klux.

The sensor offers 100Hz and 120Hz flicker noise rejection, low stand-by current consumption of 1.5µA, a supply voltage range of 2.5V to 3.6V and I2C bus voltage range from 1.7V to 5V, a moisture sensitivity level of 4, and a temperature operating range of -25 to +8°C.

The VCNL4000 is compliant to RoHS directive 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC, is free of halogens, and compatible with lead (Pb)-free soldering.
