iDP-LVDS 'bridge chips' attains VESA iDP standard

STMicroelectronis Corp. (ST) rolls out iDP-LVDS 'bridge chips' which it flaunts as the first internal DisplayPort to high-speed Dual LVDS/Quad LVDS converter chipset compliant with the VESA iDP standard. The STiDP888 and STi880 chips support the Cinema Mode display standard.

The design flexibility of iDP permits the extension of the nominal value from 3.24Gbit/s to 3.78 Gbit/s to support 120Hz Cinema Mode displays (2520x1080, 12bit/colour). The VESA iDP standard answers the connection requirement between a TV controller SoC and a TV panel Timing Controller (TCON) within a TV chassis. It lowers the cost and manufacturing complexity compared with LVDS, explains ST.

The STiDP888 and STiDP880 each have a chipset that uses a single link internal DisplayPort interface consisting of four main link lanes and hot plug detect, operating without a sideband channel.

The device supports the standard iDP link rate of 3.24Gbit/s per lane (12.96Gbit/s over 4 lanes) and extended 3.78Gbit/s rate per lane (with a total link bandwidth of 15.12Gbit/s over 4 lanes), accommodating interface connectivity for a wide range of panels up to Full HD and Cinema Mode format (120Hz and 12 bits per colour). The advanced pre-emphasis and equaliser built into these devices provides robust performance over FFC and UTP type cables.

The STiDP888 and STiDP880 are now in mass production and available in 12x12mm 164-ball LFBGA packages.
