Microchip Technology has tapped the MIPS32 M14K core for the expansion of its 32bit microcontroller family. The company has licensed MIPS Technologies Inc.'s MIPS32 M14K core family for the same.

Microchip said that the higher code density in the M14K core family, achieved using MIPS' new microMIPS instruction set architecture (ISA), led to at least a 30 per cent code-size reduction with minimal compromise in performance. Interrupt-latency improvements and low power consumption are among the extra features of the M14K cores that will be seen in the next generation of PIC32 microcontrollers.

Microchip said that the M14K cores will allow the company to compete better in the 32bit microcontroller market by delivering high performance and improved code density, which are critical factors in embedded applications. The M14K cores also provide cost and performance scalability, while maintaining 100 per cent code compatibility with PIC32 MCUs based on the M4K core.
