Graphics SoC debuts in compact 544-ball PBGA package

Fujitsu Semiconductor America Inc. (FSA) debuts the Fujitsu MB86R11 "Emerald-L" 2D/3D graphics System-on-a-Chip (SoC) that integrates a GDC and GPU in a compact 544-ball PBGA package.

Based on the 400MHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and a custom graphics core, the SoC offers 2D and 3D graphics targeting applications such as automotive cluster, navigation, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) as well as deployment with the newly announced Fujitsu 360° wrap-around video imaging technology .

The graphics core, which is OpenGL 2.0-compliant, features a unified shader array that incorporates 16- and 32bit pixel colour formats, a 32bit pixel format frame buffer, and textures for RGBA, ARGB, and ABGR colour ordering; as well as 16 parallel floating point units.

Three independent display controller units (DCUs) built into the graphics core support up to five displays total and four independent video-capture inputs. The MB86R11 "Emerald-L" graphics SoC also incorporates a memory controller, power management unit, and a wide range of peripheral and high-speed interfaces.

The graphics core offloads less complex graphics tasks from the GPU to minimise processing overhead and memory access while reducing power consumption to allow the chip to run optimally without the need for active or passive cooling.

"The MB86R11 'Emerald-L' represents highly innovative, efficient, and integrated graphics system-on-a-chip technology for advanced automotive applications," said Dan Landeck, senior manager for marketing at FSA.

The MB86R11 supports up to 1GB of 32bit DDR3-800 or DDR2-800 memory and uses a unified memory architecture providing a maximum memory performance of 3.2GByte/s.

The SoC's flexible power management unit allows the selective disabling and enabling of its core to control its power consumption at specific times. The device also features several low-power standby modes and external memory auto refresh.

Samples of the MB86R11 are available now at Rs.1,821.15 ($39) each.
