SIMD support boosts 32bit CPU core line

Renesas Electronics Corp. claims its 32bit V850 CPU core, the V850E2H, is as capable as DSPs in real-time control and signal processing performance, making it ideal for embedded systems that require better processing performance such as factory automation equipment and automotive control units for engine control.

The V850E2H features an integrated coprocessor with single instruction multiple data (SIMD) support that allows processing of four units of data, which gives excellent signal processing performance without an external DSP. It also features a high-speed branch predictor for rapid execution of loop instructions, resulting in a 10 per cent speed increase in programs made of basic instructions that do not include signal processing. Renesas said these allow designers to integrate microcontrollers with built-in V850E2H CPU core in their systems.

The V850E2v4 architecture adds superior signal processing performance to the excellent control performance of existing CPU cores such as the V850E2M and further improves on it with enhanced basic functions and SIMD extensions for signal processing, Renesas said. Among the V850E2v4 architecture's key features are reduced program development man-hours and compatibility with earlier CPU cores.
