Quad-core processor promises up to 2.5GHz clock speed

ARM releases the much-awaited Cortex-A15 MPCore processor, codenamed "Eagle", designed to power future smart phones, tablets, high-end digital home entertainment devices and even wireless base stations and enterprise infrastructure products.

The Cortex-A15 runs at up to 2.5GHz, is available in dual- and quad-core configurations and promises up to 5x performance improvement over existing advanced processors. It is said to be light-years better than ARM's own Cortex-A9, which is just now finding its way to devices.

Designed for 32nm and 28nm geometries but also meant to be scalable for future geometries, the processor boosts the Cortex-A series with efficient hardware support for OS virtualisation, soft-error recovery, larger memory addressability and system coherency.

It is also fully compatible with existing Cortex-A processors, smoothing the path for developers of hardware and software such as Android, Adobe Flash Player, Java Platform Standard Edition (Java SE), JavaFX, Linux, Microsoft Windows Embedded Compact 7, Symbian and Ubuntu.
