Photonic ICs attain 100Gbit/s transmission rate

Infinera Corp. reveals that it has attained 100Gbit/s coherent transmission of data using 500Gbit/s (500G) photonic ICs (PICs) over a 1,348km route on the XO optical fibre communications network between Denver and Dallas.

The 500G PICs, each integrating five 100G channels, were used for both transmitting and receiving a 100G signal on the transmission route. Infinera explained that the 500G PICs incorporate more than 600 optical elements on a pair of indium phosphide chips.

The 100G channel was transmitted using phase modulated quadrature phase-shift key (PM-QPSK) modulation and coherent detection to enable unrepeatered transmission over the long haul distance.
