Online IGBT selection tool optimises power management

International Rectifier unveils an online insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) selection tool that helps designers to optimise power management design for a wide range of applications including motor drives, UPS devices, solar inverters and welding. The online tool, available at mypower.irf.com/IGBT, evaluates bus voltage, switching frequency, short circuit protection requirements, and other conditions to provide component part costs and an estimate of operating losses and suggest possible replacement parts.

In the IGBT selection process, numerous parameters need to be assessed to come up with the optimal design. In calculating operating losses, for example, operating frequency, bus voltage, and operating current need to be determined, making it difficult for engineers to come up with a single metric. IR said the online tool simplifies the complex process by allowing designers to use IR's vast IGBT portfolio and to assess the performance trade-offs. IR's array of IGBTs offer various trade-offs in switching speed as well as devices for applications with no minimum short circuit requirements.

"IR offers a broad array of IGBT products enabling optimised inverter designs for different applications," David Poon, IR's vice-president for Asia-Pacific Sales, said.
