At the recently held ESC-India 2010, Bangalore, experts from the industry gathered to discuss whether Indian design houses were ready to move up the value chain. The panellists and the audience actively engaged in a discussion about the current nature and future of the Indian design houses, the untapped areas, and how one could move up the value chain.

"Of the nearly $41 billion[Rs.1.93 lakh crore] local market for electronics in India, production by local firms accounts for a small percentage. But design services firms here are looking to play a growing role in the domestic electronics market," said P. V. G Menon, president and CEO, VANN Consulting and moderator for the panel in his opening remarks. He also voiced some of the growing concerns, "Things are changing. There is a big push to file patents, revenue mix is changing —to get licensing revenues increasingly. It is also important for design houses to move forward [up the value chain] from nation point. Design houses [need] to worry about: How much to pay for royalties to patent holders? "
