Power hold-up module cuts capacitance requirement

XP Power rolls out the MTH100 hold-up module that significantly reduces the amount of bulk hold capacitance requirement by as much as 80 per cent. The MTH100 can be utilised in systems with an input current up to 10A. These encapsulated modules are designed for sustaining short-term power to critical avionic and vetronic systems in cases of power dropouts.

The charger output voltage can be programmed to work with both military and industrial DC/DC converters. The device accommodates a wide input range of +10 to +40VDC, automatically detecting the input drop-out and initiating extended hold-up by utilisation of capacitors charged to a high voltage.

Charging the capacitors to a higher voltage (typically, +36VDC or +45VDC) than the nominal system voltage (usually of +28VDC) significantly reduces the amount of capacitance required. Consider a power supply system that needs to operate through a power dropout of 200ms while supporting a 30W load without interruption using a DC/DC converter with a minimum input of 10V. Without a hold-up module, if the power dropout occurs at 16Vin, the system would require over 90,000uF of capacitance. By utilising the MTH100 module, the above system needs only 7,000µF of capacitance, or 92 per cent less. The end result in cost, weight and board space savings is a solution to engineers, faced with the challenge of squeezing large numbers of bulky components into every reducing system spaces which needs to fulfil a dropout and hold-up criteria.

The device measures 40mm x 26mm x 12.7mm and the base plate cooled MTH100 module is typically 98 per cent efficient, operating across a temperature range of -55 to +100˚C. It comes with a full three-year warranty; priced at Rs.8,426.22 ($179.40) each (OEM quantities).
