DC/DC switching regulators ease design complexity

Analog Devices, Inc. debuts the 20V, 2A ADP2302 and 3A ADP2303 DC/DC step-down non-synchronous switching regulators that integrate a high-side MOSFET promising power conversion efficiencies greater than 90 per cent. The ADP2302 and ADP2303 also support a wide input voltage range from 3V to 20V to accommodate a diversity of point-of-load applications, including consumer electronics and industrial and communications infrastructure equipment.

The highly integrated regulators feature internal loop compensation, integrated soft-start circuitry and bootstrap diodes to enable high-density solutions for intermediate bus generation and point-of-load regulation. A power-good feature also enables a simple and reliable start-up sequence.

The output voltage is adjustable from 0.8V to 80 per cent of input voltage (VIN). The regulators' current-mode, fixed-frequency PWM (pulse-width modulation) architecture provides excellent stability and transient response. Under light loads, the regulators automatically operate in PFM (pulse frequency modulation) to reduce light load losses. A precision-enable pin allows the regulator to be turned on at a precise input voltage for sequencing of multiple devices. System reliability and protection are enhanced further through OCP (over-current protection), UVLO (under-voltage lockout) and TSD (thermal shutdown). The ADP2302 and ADP2303 are ideal replacements for less efficient linear regulators.

With a wide input voltage range up to 20V, the ADP2302 and ADP2303 support a variety of signal-chain loads where circuits may include ADCs (analogue to digital converters), DACs (digital-to-analogue converters) , precision amplifiers and other high-performance, sub-micron ICs such as DSPs (digital signal processors) and FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays). The fast transient response and ease-of-use make these switching regulators a good match for powering FPGAs and Analog Devices' Blackfin and SHARC processors. The switching regulators are also supported by the ADIsimPower design tool, which makes selecting components, simulating power supply performance and building evaluation circuits easy and fast.

The ADP2302 and ADP2303 are now available in 5mm x 6mm 8-lead SOIC packages and are rated for operation from -40�C to +125�C. The ADP2302 is priced at Rs.52.30 ($1.12) each for 1,000 quantities, and the ADP2303 is priced at Rs.70.05 ($1.50) each for 1,000 quantities. Samples and production quantities are available now.
