Hari Chereddi, managing director, Sujana Energy Limited drew attention to customer awareness as a key factor to influence the growth of LEDs. But this should be done only if the manufacturers are sure of the claims they make. Also, he highlighted that to make the product en-mass, we need to rethink on the prices at which it is offered as a high price will drive the individual customer away, who can opt for a lower option called CFL which is also an energy efficient product available in the market and at much lower cost. He also called for innovation in cost and business model. As he put it,"We need innovation in cost and business model [to address penetration of LEDs] which we are not able to take off at this time. Potential business models can be BOOT —Build Own Operate Transfer, Microfinancing, Public Private Partnership, Subsidies, tax breaks and other benefits. Standardisation and consumer awareness needs to be developed to make the product a success.

Anil Valia, lighting designer, educator and consultant gave the consultant's perspective on commercial lighting.

Valia's educative and informative presentation covered the processes involved in lighting system design, the various selection criteria, and other technical parameters such as CRI, binning, and luminous efficacy. He showed with examples how variations to the various technical parameters can impact the efficacy and light output. He also busted some of the myths surrounding LED lighting with statistical and practical proofs. His presentation also brought forth the key perspectives and concerns of LED lighting consultants and end users.

Vijay Kumar Gupta, managing director, Kwality Industries provided insight on the supply chain challenges and impact on cost reduction. He provided a complete picture on the LED lighting market and the trends in costing. He explained with detail the process technology and other aspects adding to the cost of LED and elaborated the roadmap for cost reduction. Gupta also covered the value chain of LED lighting from substrates to luminaires and described the costs at each level as well the opportunities for innovation and cost reduction at each level. Gupta provided a holistic analysis of the LED market, its evolving opportunities, the government policy framework support, and the road ahead.
