SMC white LEDs provide 200mW power dissipation

Vishay Intertechnology Inc. has developed power surface-mount white LEDs optimised to provide very low thermal resistance down to 300K/W and power dissipation up to 200mW.

They are available in two binning versions. For a wider range of pin compatibility with similar devices, the VLMW321xx LEDs feature three anodes and one cathode, while the VLMW322xx LEDs offer three cathodes and one anode.

The devices feature a PLCC 4 package with a lead frame optimised to provide very low thermal resistance down to 300K/W and power dissipation up to 200mW, which in turn enables high drive currents up to 50mA for twice the brightness of Vishay's high-intensity SMD LEDs in the PLCC 2 package. For automotive applications, the VLMW321xx and VLMW322xx LEDs are automotive-qualified AEC-Q101. Silicone casting provides for a long service life.

The high-intensity LEDs are intended for traffic signals and signs; interior and exterior lighting; automotive interior and exterior lighting; indicators and backlighting in household appliances, toys and games, and mobile phones; camera flashes; and general illumination for retail and window displays, emergency lighting and signs, and museums and showrooms.

Built on high-efficiency InGaN technology, the VLMW321xx and VLMW322xx devices provide a high luminous intensity of 1400mcd to 3550mcd, and luminous flux from 7000mlm to 8900mlm. The LEDs feature a 60° of half-intensity and a luminous intensity ratio per packing unit of less than 1.6, and are categorised, per packing unit, for luminous intensity and colour.

The Pb-free and RoHS-compliant devices are available in 8mm tape and are compatible with IR-reflow, vapour phase, and wave soldering processes according to CECC 00802 and J-STD-020, and preconditioning according to JEDEC Level 2a. The LEDs offer an ESD-withstand voltage up to 2kV (HBM) according to JESD22-A114-B.

Samples and production quantities of the new VLMW321xx and VLMW322xx power LEDs are available now with lead times of eight weeks for larger orders.
