MIMO signal generator saves costs in radio designs

From VeriWave comes WaveGen, a 3x3 multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) signal generator that verifies radio accuracy in radios and cuts test times and overall test costs up to 50-75 per cent.

WaveGen replaces three individual signal generators, one for each spatial stream, and a separate channel emulator, with one, integrated, test device, thereby reducing equipment costs from Rs.1.17crore ($250,000) to Rs. 30.43 lakh($65,000).

By offering an endless variety of waveforms automatically generated by the test hardware, WaveGen also vastly reduces engineering efforts involved in creating I/Q waveforms and manually synchronising them, saving countless hours spent by DSP engineers.

"With 3x3 MIMO now being deployed on Access Points and making its way into mobile devices, making it simpler and less costly to test allows chip and device manufacturers to quickly verify their designs, avoiding costly radio re-designs," said Eran Karoly, VeriWave's VP of Marketing.

According to Karoly, before WaveGen, the only way to test 3x3 MIMO radios was to stitch together three individual signal generators, one for each spatial stream.

These signal-generating devices would have to be synchronised to create a 3x3 signal using complex and expensive hardware and software with I/Q waveforms would have to be created by DSP engineers. After each test run, new I/Q files have to be created.

With WaveGen, complete MIMO signals are generated by a single VeriWave hardware blade and are automatically synchronised using the WaveGen software.

Karoly also claimed WaveGen to be the first to integrate channel emulation, the process of subjecting the signal to real-world traffic conditions by emulating environments like hallways, office buildings and the outdoors.

Next week, VeriWave is introducing WaveInsite, which allows interoperability over the air testing of Wi-Fi devices and infrastructures. WaveInsite pricing starts at Rs.4.68 lakh ($9,995).

WaveGen 3x3 MIMO prices begin at Rs.30.43 lakh($65,000).
