Three design models for multicore systems

This article looks into three design models of multicore processors: planar pattern, grid pattern, and SMP system. Use of low-cost and low power multicore processors are now the trend in embedded design.

The planar pattern is an example of a broad and diverse category of multicore designs, collectively called asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP or ASMP). The grid-on chip or grid pattern covers any multiprocessor system made up of a collection of fully independent, networked nodes. A symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) system, meanwhile, has a single-image operating system that runs on two or more identical processing cores that share memory.
