India GPS navigation pioneer SatNav Technologies has entered a strategic tie-up to use Survey of India (SOI) maps and build value added products for consumers. SOI is India's principal mapping agency. The agreement allows SatNav Technologies to release the SOI-approved digital maps and custom map content within the public domain for commercial use in a range of navigation and location-based solutions (LBS) in the mobile and personal navigation system.

In another announcement, SatNav Technologies also informed that they are releasing an enhanced map data base, being created since the year 2000, to now cover 404 cities and 16 lakh Points of Interest (POIs). The enhanced maps would have enhanced features like more POI content, accuracy, road network validation, gap in median and turn restrictions. The maps are constantly enhanced and on the anvil are plans to grow this to 500 cities, 30 lakh destinations, and ultimately the 6 lakh villages across the country.

SatNav enjoyed a multi-fold growth last year. With the increase in the POIs and number of cities covered across India, SatNav aims to further ramp up its growth in this fiscal. The current partnership with SOI will help SatNav Technologies take this map making initiative to an entirely new plane and comply with the regulations of the Government of India and the provisions of the National Mapping Policy while offering much improved solutions to its consumers.

"SatNav has always been working with highest quality standards and systematic approach but the Survey of India tie-up will instill more confidence in our existing clients and partners and will also give us an edge over others," Amit Prasad, founder and CEO, SatNav. "We are constantly building navigation applications keeping in mind our end user and through this map enhancement we expect to meet the growing market demand for navigation, map and location-based services and technologies."

Major General R.S. Tanwar, Additional Surveyor General of India commented, "Survey of India is happy to sign MOU with SatNav Technologies Pvt. Ltd for generation of value added products and services to meet the salient needs of the society which should be customer focused. It should serve the larger needs of society to get benefitted from core data/sets (digital topographic database) generated by Survey of India by identifying their user specific needs. It will certainly help in improving the quality of life. SatNav should take a leading role through generation of versatile; user friendly and cost viable products on SOI's core data for immense utility to them, in time to come."
