The joint venture with MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. will have a total capacity of around 50MWp.

LEAD: Solar cell maker Q-Cells SE announced a joint venture with silicon wafer manufacturer MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. The JV will build large solar parks, in which each partner will have a 50 per cent share. The first park, to be built by a subsidiary of Q-Cells, will be in Strasskirchen, Bavaria, Germany. It will have a total capacity of around 50 Mwp, making it the largest ground mounted PV system in Germany to be operated using crystalline solar cell technology.

Marko Schulz, a member of the executive board of Q-Cells and the person in charge of Q-Cells International's project business, reported that the company expects to complete the facility and connect it to the public electricity network by the end of 2009. "Strasskirchen represents a new dimension for us and we are proving that we are able to achieve very high quality in a record-short time," he said.

The facility will have around 225,000 modules installed on around 135 hectares, and will generate energy that will roughly correspond to the elimination of 35,000 tons of CO2. This is about the power consumption of around 15,000 households in a year.

The two companies are investing up to around Rs.482.66 crore ($100 million) in the joint venture. MEMC will supply the silicon wafers and Q-Cells will turn them into solar cells.

Following completion, it is planned to sell the project to an external investor.
