All Flash V850 MCUs

NEC Electronics launched 15 new 32-bit All Flash V850 MCUs for inverter and motor control applications in household appliances such as air conditioners, washing machines and dryers; as well as for factory automation equipment; and photovoltaic power systems.

The devices operate at 100MHz and offer increased performance over the previous generation MCU V850E/Ix3. They feature increased on-chip flash memory up to 480KB, double the capacity of the V850E/Ix3. Other peripheral expansion features include, an on-chip USB function interface, 20 ADC channels, additional op-amps and analogue comparators. These new All Flash MCUs come in 100-pin V850E/IG4 and 128-pin V850E/IH4 packages.

Environmental regulations and the increasing importance of energy savings have increased the demand for eco-conscious products that use energy-efficient inverter control technology. Also, next-generation eco-friendly household systems such as photovoltaic power systems, electric heat pumps, and fuel-cell systems are attracting increasing attention. To address these growing demands, NEC Electronics developed the new MCUs with finer-grained inverter control functionalities compared to the previous generation V850E/Ix3 to enable the design of cost-effective and eco-friendly appliances.

NEC Electronics believes these new MCUs will enable appliance manufacturers to reduce costs, and be faster to market with the development of eco-friendly household appliances and compact, low-cost factory automation equipment. The company plans to market them aggressively and continue to expand its line-up of high-performance inverter-control MCUs.

Samples of the MCUs are available now. Prices vary depending on memory capacity. The V850E/IH4 offers 480KB of flash memory and 24 KB of RAM and is priced at Rs.587.84 ($12) per unit. Mass production is slated to begin in December 2009.
