Agilent Technologies is looking at expanding its Indian clientele and trimming its headcount in India, if necessary, to reduce costs, reports The Hindu Business Line.

"The company is still assessing the situation in India and it would still be about 3-6 months before it could make any announcements. We are in the process of assessing the situation to see if we need to trim the workforce here," said Venkatesh Valluri, Agilent's president and country general manager – India.

"There are no plans for India right now but this could get linked to the international market and we could see a cut," he added.

Agilent had previously announced it plans to layoff 2,700 employees as revenue in its electronic measurement segment is expected to be down about 30 per cent from 2008 to the lowest level in the company's 10-year history.

"Like all other technology firms globally, even our business has been impacted. But what we have seen is that local companies here have not been impacted to that extent and going ahead the focus would be on them to help us," he said.

Agilent would focus on areas such as aerospace, defence, manufacturing and healthcare, he added.
