IP convergence processor boasts low power

HelloSoft Inc. has unveiled its ultra low-power IP Convergence platform that the company claims is five times more power efficient than existing solutions.

The HS100 combines HelloSoft's patented technologies for advanced ultra low-power ARM processor and patented SmartWLAN, and its complete convergence software suite including highly-optimised, most-interoperable, widely-deployed VOIP, IMS, Voice Call Continuity, Intelligent Connection Manager, and Data Session Connectivity software. It supports UMA and interfaces for 2G/3G/4G (LTE/WiMAX) connectivity and co-existence algorithms required to deliver the state of the art convergence chip.

HelloSoft's SmartWLAN technology, based on cross-layer optimisation and intelligent power management provides quantum improvement in power consumption leading to talk times in excess of 20 hours and standby time of 250 hours as compared to 2-4 hours talk time and 20-50 hours standby time for traditional VoWLAN solutions. The IP Convergence Processor caters to low-mid to high-end applications at low power with dynamic frequency and voltage scaling.

The HS100 phone-on-a-chip integrates 366MHz ARM9E processor, dual-band WLAN 802.11abg, hardware security engine, best-in-class QoS, and all peripherals required for a powerful and multimedia-capable low-BOM multi-mode device with long battery life.

Allan Johnson, Vice President, Product Management says "We have bundled HS100 chip with our in-house convergence software to enable OEMs/ODMs quickly bring to market affordable Cellular/WiFi, WiMAX/WiFi and Cellular/WiMAX/WiFi handsets. The chip enables operators ensure consistent user experience across access networks through intelligent connection management and seamless voice/data session handover."

He continues "We have scored several design-wins from Tier-1 OEMs and operators. To provide a glimpse of the success this chip is achieving—HS100 based VoWLAN handset from a Tier-1 OEM is slated to hit the market this year. Our design has reduced the component count to yield this low-BOM phone with enhanced battery-life. HS100 has also secured a design-win for low-cost dual-mode phone from a Tier-1 carrier."

Other applications of this chip include any handheld or mobile device that needs to be WiFi-enabled. Examples include Digital Picture Frame, Internet Radio, wireless handheld devices such as scanners, music devices etc.
