APAC to drive growth in MPU market

Keywords:MPU  microprocessors  RISC

Facing harsh market conditions in 2009, the microprocessor market is expected to see its second consecutive year of low growth, according to Databeans, Inc. Players will struggle near term, but growth is predicted to resume towards year-end.

The microprocessor IC industry has long acted as a bellwether for the general health of the technology market as a whole, as an estimated 74 per cent of MPU revenue stems from notebook, desktop, and server sales.

Furthermore, over the next several years, MPUs are predicted to enter into a variety of new markets, making future market planning a critical activity.

Databeans' 2009 report on microprocessors recognises four identifiable MPU architectures: RISC, x86, PowerPC, and GPU. X86 is the oldest and still the most widely used architecture for computing applications, thus accounting for an estimated 43 per cent of the total market share. This dominance is predicted to continue, despite a slight decline in 2009, thanks to expanding sales in the server and workstation markets. RISC, which is primarily found in embedded consumer and industrial applications, will experience the industry's strongest overall growth rates because of the RISC ARM architecture found in mobile phones, game consoles, multimedia players, and other popular consumer electronics.

As the largest production region for PCs worldwide, Asia Pacific is predicted to continue its majority control of MPU sales. The world's top PC manufacturers, HP and Dell, manufacturer and assemble the great majority of their PCs in China and Taiwan, while upcoming domestic producers ASUS and Lenovo have been rapidly expanding their own product offerings, while aggressively marketing to new consumers in India and China. Other regions are predicted to experience modest growth in industrial, automotive, and other miscellaneous embedded product segments. Asia Pacific will continue to drive growth and is predicted to account for 58 per cent of all MPU revenue by 2014.
