Azimuth Systems Inc. has announced a wireless broadband emulator designed to test WiMax and LTE wireless networks.

Also, AT4 Wireless has unveiled its E2010 Broadband Wireless Test Set for life testing LTE test products.

Azimuth's ACE MX provides advanced channel emulation features required for testing advanced wireless infrastructure equipment and devices. It also includes backward-compatibility channel emulation features required to test 2G/3G cellular products.'

LTE and WiMax systems both use multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing technologies. MIMO exploits real-world channel conditions such as multi-path and fading to improve channel performance. As a result, laboratory testing of MIMO systems requires the use of channel emulation techniques such as dynamic channel conditioning, shadow fading and complex antenna correlation.

The ACE MX's channel modelling and emulation capabilities are said to enable equipment manufacturers and service providers to reliably and accurately characterise the operation and performance of MIMO-based systems under a multitude of real-world RF conditions.

The signal between transceiver and mobile device is duplicated by reflections; it varies in strength due to mobile device movement. One way to test signals is by placing a cable between the two. While providing a test bed, the scheme does not yield real-world channels for the purposed of testing. On the other hand, a channel emulator recreates repeatable, real-world multi-path and fading conditions in the lab.

Key features of the ACE MX include dynamically programmable parameters such as propagation delay, output power, Doppler and preprogrammed, standard industry channel models such as 3GPP, 3GPP2, ITU and SCME.

The emulator can be configured from 1x1 SISO to 8x4 MIMO setups.

George Reed, vice president of marketing at Azimuth Systems, claimed ACE MX is the first channel emulator designed to test the smart antenna performance requirements of 3GPP, IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11n standards needed to ensure the delivery of LTE, WiMax, Wi-Fi and 2G/3G cellular infrastructure equipment and devices.
