Power IC growth forecast trimmed

Keywords:Power management  analogue ICs  power IC revenues  voltage regulators

Power management devices are expected to represent the fastest growing opportunity in the analogue ICs segment, says Gartner, but at a lower rate than previously expected.

Counted as "voltage regulators" by the market research group, the segment will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 3 per cent through 2012, according to a revised forecast.

The earlier forecast, which only projected power IC revenues through 2011, said voltage regulators would grow at a 7.2 per cent CAGR, reaching Rs.54,039.30 crore ($10.8 billion) in 2011. The updated forecasts suggest the market will only be worth Rs.48,034.93 crore ($9.6 billion) in 2012.

The demand for voltage regulators from makers of computer systems and industrial installations is forecast to increase at 4 per cent CAGR over the period, since the devices act as "point of load" supplies for the local circuitry. The researchers maintain users will pay a premium for high efficiency, because high efficiency reduces the costs associated with aluminium heat sinks, computer cooling and air conditioning gear.

Large computers, communications infrastructure equipment, manufacturing and test equipment are expected to see "somewhat stronger growth patterns through 2012."

Power management ICs in consumer segments, on the other hand, will see only very small growth, said to be 0.1 per cent over the years to 2012.

AC-DC regulators and DC-DC regulators will show the fastest growth—at a 6 per cent and 8 per cent CAGR, respectively—because of the high energy transfer efficiencies they offer in computers and telecom switching gear.

Revenue for linear regulators, though they should remain popular, will decline through 2012 because of multiple supply sources and rapidly declining prices in cellular phones and consumer gear.
