Meet WiMAX power amp challenges

Managing power in mobile WiMAX is becoming very important as first-generation designs are tested and deployed. Designers of mobile WiMAX devices face specific challenges when it comes to power amplifiers. One challenge in designing for mobile WiMAX has to do with its long range—typically achieving coverage of about 1 km per cell—which requires high transmit power. Delivering higher transmit power comes at a cost to power consumption. As higher output powers are used, power amplifier efficiency becomes more critical.

Power amplifier (PA) designers and those choosing PAs for mobile WiMAX need to find the best balance between high power and high efficiency in order to ensure robust links, high data rates and good range.
