Japanese electronics concern Fujitsu has announced to take over Siemens AG's 50 per cent stake in Fujitsu Siemens Computer (FSC) and integrate it into the Fujitsu concern. In contrast to earlier speculations, production in Germany will not be shut down—for the time being.

Fujitsu pointed out that FSC's integration into the Fujitsu concern is in line with its global growth strategy. Fujitsu President Kunikai Nozoe said that his company will not only take over a large client base in the EMEA countries but also R&D resources and human capital.

A company spokesperson explained that Fujitsu plans to continue all activities in Germany, including the production in Augsburg and its logistics centre in Sömmerda. Earlier, market watchers had speculated that this production for cost reasons is not competitive in a global scale and job cuts would be unavoidable. Also the spokesperson did not rule out that after a period of assessment, a staff reduction would be possible. The spokesperson pointed out that Fujitsu plans to strengthen its market position in EMEA. The company even plans to move server-related R&D activities to Germany.

FSC Chief Executive Officer Bernd Bischoff announced to leave the company "for personal reasons". The company's Chief Financial Officer, Kai Flore, has been appointed Bischoff's successor.

The transaction is scheduled to close on April 1, 2009, Siemens and Fujitsu said in a joint press release. Fujitsu will pay Rs.3,007.89 crore (€ 450 million) for Siemens' 50-per cent stake in the company. This price is in line with earlier reports.

Siemens justified his withdrawal from the computer business with its ongoing concentration to its core business. "We will continue to focus our strategic development on industry, energy and healthcare," said Siemens CFO Joe Kaeser in the statement.
