Measuring RPM through a system with LED display and PSoC

In industries as well as in R&D laboratories the measurement and control of such variables as pressure, temperature, flow, position, rotation of a wheel, and others demands precise measurement and control. The simple design in this application note by J. Jayapandian from Cypress Semiconductor accurately measures the speed, in RPMs, of a rotating wheel using an inexpensive IR optocoupler connected to a PSoC device. A 16bit counter and timer are programmed to count the TTL pulses from the IR coupler. The RPM count value is then displayed in the seven-segment display unit that is connected to the PSoC port. The MCU M8C sends the measured RPM value to port 2. The driver circuit design is compatible with port 2 of the PSoC device; it enables the seven-segment display and visually provides the measured RPMs. The usage of an IR coupler is to avoid malfunctions due to normal environmental light interference.
