Next-generation automotive electronic systems need highly-specialised, cost-optimised devices to meet market requirements. Considering the dramatic increase in development costs for state-of-the-art process technologies, specialisation of traditional microcontrollers no longer makes business sense.

For volume production, the FPGA design is mapped directly to a structured ASIC without the need for re-synthesis or additional verification. This new approach puts hardware definition, not just software development, in the hands of automotive electronic systems designers. This results in creating an application-optimised automotive MCU in far less time and far lower cost than with any current fixed function MCU.
