Basic audio measurement guidelines

Posted: 16 Jun 2008     Print Version  Bookmark and Share

Keywords:audio measurements  A/V quality test  audio level  frequency response  SNR

Audio testing is concerned with the six main performance benchmarks: level, frequency response, total harmonic distortion plus noise (THD+N), phase, cross talk and SNR.

Based on the types of testing required for different audio devices, this article uses a device and a signal path as an example for testing, enumerates the basic set-up considerations and discusses the "Big Six" measurements in detail, using analyser reading meters and one frequency sweep for each.

Understanding the principles behind these approaches will provide a framework for working with faster, more informative techniques such as FFT analysis, multi-tone testing and the continuous sweep (log chirp) method used in the Apx Series of _analysers.
