Comparing proprietary and standards-based radio solutions

Although many engineers believe low-cost wireless is wrapped-up by Bluetooth and ZigBee, proprietary RF alternatives can be better choices for low-cost products.

Most design engineers consider Bluetooth and ZigBee the only two choices for low-power solutions depending on the application. Bluetooth is ideal for widely compatible communications on a personal area network (PAN) and ZigBee excels for products used on networks where infrequent and reliable communications are needed.

This article first describes the design challenges in a generic way and later shows the benefits of an integrated proprietary RF chip manufactured by the author�s company (the nRF24xx series), for these types

of applications.

An RF wireless mouse is an example of a simple, low power, cost sensitive wireless application alternative. It shows how a proprietary solution could be better than Bluetooth and ZigBee for a product that demands long battery life, and reliable wireless communications with low duty cycles.
