Smart partitioning in WiMAX radios shows design challenges (1)

The WiMax Design shows that deciding how to split mixed-signal functions between two or more dice is a complex exercise in balancing design tradeoffs.

Analogue technologies progress at a more measured pace dictated by innovations in circuits and physical transistor modelling. These technologies improve incrementally on multiple dimensions of performance, power, and integration.

As technology becomes more expensive to deploy, the return needed to justify these developments increases. Competitive forces also drive companies to invest heavily early in a standard's life cycle.

Development choices should be made to minimize electronic bill of materials, size, and time-to-market (TTM). Intelligent design of system partitioning is instrumental in achieving success.
