Develop low-power apps with MCUs

There is an increasing trend in the use of microcontrollers (MCUs) in low-power, battery-run devices such as Bluetooth headsets, digital thermometers, electronic meters, glucose meters, MP3 players and multimedia phones.

The last five to ten years have witnessed a trend towards portable, as well as longer runtimes for low-power devices. Engineers are faced with the daunting task of developing cost-effective MCU-based ultra low-power devices that are required to operate for years on the same battery. In such applications, every microampere of current should be carefully scrutinised to understand where power is consumed.

This requirement is even more important in India, where the proliferation of low-power devices helps balance our nation's insatiable demand for energy by conserving it. This article elaborates on some of the essential areas designers need to focus on when developing low-power applications.
