Based on data from Dow Jones VentureOne, Ernst & Young reported venture capital investments in cleantech companies grew by 18 per cent this year.

Investments were up to Rs.2,304.91 crore ($571.6 million) in Q1, compared to Rs.1,951.27 crore ($483.9 million) in Q1 of 2007. However, the deals in the segment fell by 11 per cent to 34, the report said. The overall growth in cleantech investment bucks the trend of overall U.S. venture capital investment in Q1, which declined by 7 per cent to Rs.26,210.51 crore ($6.5 billion).

The alternative fuels group had the largest recipient of capital with Rs.717.76 crore ($178 million) invested—or 31 per cent of the quarterly industry total, the report added.

The energy/electricity generation group's investments represented 26 per cent of the cleantech industry and totalled Rs.598.00 crore ($148.3 million). Investments in the solar segment also grew by 136 per cent over the last year to Rs.533.89 crore ($132.4 million).
