VI bricks feature advanced modular power platform

The VI BRICK, from Vicor's brick business unit, touts an advanced modular power platform incorporating the technical attributes of the company's V•I Chip technology and robust packaging that facilitates enhanced thermal management and through-hole assembly. The family includes a collection of enhanced bus converter modules (BCMs), pre-regulator modules (PRMs) and voltage transformation modules (VTMs).

"Incorporation of V•I Chip technology into the traditional brick environment gives power designers significantly increased power capabilities and greater design flexibility," said Joe Sullivan, product marketing manager.

VI BRICK BCMs are a solution for intermediate bus architecture (IBA) or point-of-load (POL) designs that require multiple output voltages. They are available in 11 models (nominal input is 48Vdc) and three high-voltage models to 380V; output voltages are from 1.5Vdc to 48Vdc. Power densities range to 390W/in³. They tout fast transient response and thus less required output capacitance (and therefore space and cost savings) for energy storage near the load.

The family's PRM and VTM modules offer a flexible and scalable architecture for DC/DC power conversion utilising the company's Factorised Power architecture in a robust "brick-like" package designed for efficient thermal management. These models include six PRMs, and 12 VTMs that take "factorised bus voltage" from the PRM and provide transformation and isolation.

The architecture facilitates several design configurations including multiple outputs, high power arrays, high-current/low voltage, high voltage, and separation of regulation and transformation functions for real-estate and thermal management.

In addition, VI BRICK 48V DC/DC converters use Sine Amplitude Converter technology, thermally enhanced packaging technologies and advanced CIM processes to provide high power density and efficiency, fast transient response and improved thermal management. They are available in 13 models with isolated outputs ranging from 1Vdc to 48Vdc.

VI BRICKs are available in a base temperature grade of -40°C to 100°C operating, and -40°C to 125°C storage, with a slotted-flange baseplate and through-hole pin style. All modules in the VI BRICK family are RoHS-compliant and compatible with Pb-free wave soldering processes.

The low-profile (0.37 in.) PRMs, VTMs and BCMs have a footprint measuring 2.08in². The DC/DC converter modules measure 2.19-by-1.91-by-0.37 inches.

Pricing is from Rs.1,302.79 ($33) in OEM quantities. Lead times are from 4-6 weeks for samples.
