Here is a hands-on engineering introduction to the concepts and uses of statistical signal analysis (SSA). In almost all semiconductor applications today, the use of high-speed interfaces is common, and the ability to analyze signal integrity is a must. Although this article does not go into any mathematical details concerning SSA, it is important for any user to understand the boundaries of any method. SSA relies fundamentally on superposition, i.e. linearity of a system. This basically implies that any measured signal is derived by simple addition of one or more arbitrarily time shifted signals.
