Benefits of multi-phasing buck converters

Nonisolated DC/DC step-down voltage conversion is almost exclusively based on the ubiquitous buck regulator topology. The multi-phase buck regulator has inherent advantages over its single-phase counterpart and is a suitable candidate in many applications, given the trend towards lower supply voltages and greater load-current requirements. Multiphase interleaved circuits are commonly found in VRMs for computing and server applications where high output current and fast transient response is crucial. However, the scheme may also have some merit in lower current applications where profile or thermal performance is critical. The fundamental limitation of the conventional single-phase buck converter is the trade-off of efficiency and switching frequency. The multi-phase interleaved buck topology offers a solution to this conundrum.
