Basics of Software Defined Radio

Over the last decade as semiconductor technology has improved both in terms of performance capability and cost, new radio technologies have emerged from military and R&D labs and become mainstream technologies. One of these technologies is software-defined radio (SDR). This article provides a basic discussion on SDRs and their components such as digital signal processors (DSPs), field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), analogue-to-digital converters (ADC), and digital-to-analogue (DAC) converters. Also discussed are the aspects of SDRs.
