Cable internet users stand to gain a quadruple helping of bandwidth as operators deploy Data over Cable Service Interface Specification or DOCSIS 3.0, with specifications increasing the downstream broadband throughput from the current rate of 40Mbps to 160Mbps. But a major challenge for DOCSIS 3.0 is the need for a new approach in designing the RF front-end to support the increased bandwidth. Manufacturers of STBs and cable modems now have the opportunity to choose between wideband tuner and multi-tuner RF front-ends when implementing DOCSIS 3.0 designs. Both approaches have advantages, but the option that delivers superior performance and low power consumption at the right cost will have the clear edge.
