A solution for enclosing electronics used in military applications has been introduced by SprayCool Inc., dubbed as the Multi-Platform Enclosure (MPE). The MPE chassis uses the company's patented SprayCool two-phase cooling technology. This technology uses a fine mist of non-corrosive, non-conductive liquid, sprayed in a thin layer, which evaporates and cools electronics, while continuously cycling within a sealed, closed loop system. This isolates the electronics from dirty, corrosive environments found in military and industrial applications.

The MPE is the first in a planned series of enclosures that is said to revolutionise how electronics are deployed in harsh military environments, enabling the deployment of legacy or proprietary electronics with commercial-grade electronics in the same enclosure. The MPE also supports electronics cards designed for air or conduction cooling with minimal modifications, which translates into lower costs and faster development cycles for integrators and their military customers, said SprayCool.

Specs and options
The MPE enclosure can scale from 4 slots to 21 slots and is designed to meet industry standard designs for 6U x 160mm VME-64X, VPX, VXS, cPCI and CPCIe (EXP.0) and proprietary electronics boards. It offers significantly more cooling capability per slot (above 300W) than enclosures using older cooling technologies such as air or conduction cooling, according to the company. The MPE also accommodates a wide variety of customer-specified I/O options. The operating environment can range from -65°C to +71°C, and up to 100,000ft. altitude in non-pressurised compartments. The MPE meets or exceeds MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461 requirements for harsh environments.

The next-generation SprayCool MPE will be demonstrated at the Navy League Sea-Air-Space Exposition in Washington DC. The MPE enclosure is available immediately.
