DTV single-chip receivers that support the DVB-Terrestrial and -Handheld standards have been introduced by Broadcom Corp. The 65nm BCM2940 integrates a dual-mode demodulator and tuner to support both DVB-T and DVB-H for the high-growth cellular handset market.

The BCM2930 is optimised for DVB-T applications targeting STB and PC markets, and enables DTV broadcasts as a value-added feature on portable platforms.

An aggressive process technology implementation means the BCM2940 and BCM2930 significantly reduce power consumption by up to 40 per cent and footprint requirements by up to 30 per cent from current handset design budgets. Advanced tuner and demodulator design of both chips allows for measurably improved reception indoors and in high-speed environments.

The receivers integrate state-of-the-art RF tuners with standards-compliant DVB-T and DVB-H digital basebands on single die. They support the VHF III, UHF IV and V bands. The BCM2940 also supports the EU/US L-bands and integrates 4Mb MPE-FEC SRAM to handle DVB-H parallel/consecutive streams and services.

Both offer a variety of physical interfaces including SPI, SDIO and USB 2.0. They functionally exceed IEC 62002 (MBRAI) specifications for mobile video applications. They also improve signal reception with -98dBm sensitivity in DVB-T mode (QEF, QPSK-1/2) for all UHF/VHF channels, and <3dB noise figure for all bands while exceeding MBRAI specifications. They also extend battery life, at 160mW power consumption (typical conditions), and 209mW with significant margin over MBRAI specifications (DVB-T mode). They tip very low between time-slice power of <0.8mW (DVB-H mode).

Both the BCM2940 and BCM2930 are available in an FBGA package and the BCM2940 is also available in a WLBGA package. Both mobile TV devices and firmware are sampling to qualified customers. Pricing is available upon request.
