Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has unveiled the G-RocX VSC7501, said to be the industry's most integrated, lowest power Gigabit Ethernet router SoC. With the product, small and medium-sized enterprise Ethernet router ODMs and OEMs can now reduce chip count and associated BOM cost in high speed broadband and wireless routers while gaining performance in a smaller, lower-power device. Fueled by triple-play deployments and the increasing bandwidth requirements associated with converged data, voice and video applications, key applications for G-RocX include next-generation residential and SME gateways including wireless 802.11 VoIP, PON, DOCSIS and xDSL routers. Vitesse claims to be the first to achieve integration of a fully featured 6-port GbE switch with a high performance router engine. This device includes triple speed 10/100/1,000Mbit/s Cu PHY ports, line-side termination resistors, PLLs, a custom Hardware Network Address Translation (HNAT), a UART, two USB 2.0 interfaces and a PCI port.

"By leveraging our innovation and unique SimpliPHY and SparX technology, the VSC7501 delivers a higher level of integration and features vs. competitive solutions, at a superior power benchmark," said Sean Michaud, director of Ethernet marketing at Vitesse.

The G-RocX custom HNAT engine offloads packet header extraction, SIP, ARP and session table search, to enable full Gbit/s line rate routing. The router engine architecture, specifically designed for 802.11n applications, offloads software drivers and accelerates the delivery of Ethernet and wireless packets simultaneously. The integrated Gigabit Ethernet switch is based on the Vitesse SparX technology, which supports advanced Layer-2 functionality, VLANs, Spanning Tree, ACLs, QoS and Q-in-Q requirements.

Power is a critical consideration in Ethernet router board designs. G-RocX delivers a highly integrated SoC at less than 3W, enabling the removal of heat dissipating fans and the use of less expensive plastic housings further contributing to a lower system BOM.

Designed for Gigabit Ethernet router applications, the VSC7501 is available and shipping in volume. Volume pricing information is available upon request.
