Wind River announces SMP support for RTOS

Wind River Systems has announced VxWorks 6.6 with Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) support will be available on all Wind River VxWorks-based platforms in late 2007. VxWorks 6.6 SMP support for multicore processors will further empower developers to exploit the strengths of multicore processors in their products while reducing risk, development effort and cost. Additionally, Wind River will include SMP support capability in its Workbench development suite and Workbench for On-Chip Debugging solutions, enabling faster deployment of complex multiprocessor solutions.

"Developing applications for multicore architectures adds significant challenge and complexity to development and design teams," said Kuljeet Kalkat, VP of Product Management, Wind River. "The key question developers ask us is how to migrate, debug and optimise their system for multicore. By enhancing our VxWorks platforms to provide symmetric multiprocessing support capabilities, Wind River directly addresses these concerns and provides the easiest path to the benefits of multicore-from the OS to the development tools."

By providing a stable software foundation and a complete set of development tool capabilities, Wind River platforms significantly reduce the scope and complexity of multicore device software development, while taking advantage of the performance benefits of multicore processors. Customers using the VxWorks platform to build multicore processor-based devices are expected to benefit from:

•The ability to leverage existing investment in VxWorks software and tools, saving critical development time.

•Faster time-to-market by using commercially available and supported run-time platforms, and developer tools with support for multiprocessing.

•Wind River's expertise and broad technology support for multiprocessing, providing an unbiased, flexible design to meet a broad range of performance, footprint and real-time requirements.

•Advanced multicore debug and performance tuning with Workbench development suite and Workbench, On-Chip Debugging Edition. This enables customers to quickly identify problems and visualise behaviour using a patent-pending multicore debugging technology.

•Wind River device software development expertise, available via Professional Services, Technical Account.

Key customers representing a variety of industries have been selected to evaluate advance versions of the VxWorks 6.6 SMP software, including Huawei, Kuka Roboter and ZTE. Each of these customers is evaluating the precise benefits they can derive by including VxWorks SMP support into their product lines.

VxWorks 6.6 SMP is offered as an optional add-on product for all the VxWorks 6.6-based platforms. VxWorks Platforms 6.6 and the VxWorks 6.6 SMP add-on product will be available in late 2007.
