LG Electronics Inc. has file a counter-suit against America Ltd, Hitachi Ltd and Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Ltd over alleged patent infringement of its PDP technology. The flat-panel display maker's move is in response to a lawsuit filed by Hitachi Ltd last April for patent infringement on similar technologies.

"Intellectual property is one of LG's essential assets, which we will always uncompromisingly protect," Jeong Hwan Lee, executive VP and head of the Korean firm's LG Electronics Intellectual Property Center, said in a press release. "Japanese firms are filing more and more lawsuits as competition in the global display market has increased dramatically. We will proactively deal with the situation based on our patented and patent-applied-for technologies."

At issue are four patents related to methods for driving PDPs and three other patents covering PDP apparatus and cell structure.

LG and Hitachi have been trying to reach a settlement regarding PDP technology patents since 2005.
