Agilent Technologies Inc. has announced the completion of the acquisition of Adaptif Photonics GmbH, adding to its portfolio the latter's technology and products used for advanced polarisation analysis and control for the test of optical components and systems in telecommunications, as well as in the sensors and laser market.

Agilent believes the combined technology and capabilities of both companies will expand its position in optical polarisation test, allowing it to offer a full range of electrical and optical test equipment for high-speed broadband network designs.

Germany-based Adaptif has a close association with the optical centre of expertise at the Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg and has developed intellectual property in optical-measurement product development.

"This acquisition is one step in a series of actions we have taken to strengthen our optical test and measurement offerings and allows us to offer a full range of electrical and optical test equipment for high-speed broadband network designs," said Alois Hauk, photonic and network test division VP and general manager at Agilent.

Adaptif Photonics was founded in 2002 and was privately owned. Amongst investors in the company were Australia-based Redfern Photonics, which was established in 1998 to invest in and commercialise research and development outcomes in the photonics communications industry.

Another seed investor was Germany-based MAZ Level One GmbH, which supports young, technology-driven companies and combines the capital investment with personal support in a start-up centre.

The majority of Adaptif's employees have joined Agilent and financial details were not disclosed.
