AP131 audio processor from NEC Electronics

NEC Electronics Corp. has released a CPU and DSP integrated audio processor that enables 60 hrs dedicated playback of the audio data encoded by player software MOOCS player, Windows Media and iTunes without digital multi-media management support. When combined with a digital base band LSI or an application processor, it enables various audio formats including WMA, AAC, MP3 and SD-Audio (MP3/AAC) to play on a mobile phone.

AP131 supports MP4 standard format adopted in 3G handsets and ASF developed by Microsoft as well as existing SD-Audio formats. AP131 enables playback of the audio date encoded by player software MOOCS player, Windows Media and iTunes without digital multi-media management support. In addition, AP131 incorporates the function of fine clock control, achieving about 15 per cent lower power consumption compared to NEC's current product.

NEC said that the built-in hardware of the product provides a 3D surround sound function that makes the sound "expand." Moreover, customers can use their existing cell phone platform because AP131 enables audio playback on any base band.

For the harware specifications of the AP131 audio processor, it features a 32bit RISC CPU in addition to the built-in DSP dedicated for audio playback. The chip features an input clock (built-in PLL) with 32kHz rates. Peripheral interfaces include HOST I/F (16bit SRAM I/F), SD Card I/F (4bit SDCLK max. 40MHz and the direct through function) and audio I/F (I2S 2ch, slave movement and the transparency function).

The processor features a power supply voltage of 1.16-1.24V for DVDD (Core)/PLLVDD (PLL), 1.71-3.3V for EVDD (HOST I/O, ASIO) and 1.71-3.3V for SDVDD (SD I/O).

The products are housed in 6-by-6mm, 97-pin TFBGA packages. Samples are available now at Rs.408.67 ($10).
