Demodulator offers higher dynamic range, linearity

Analog Devices Inc. has introduced ADL5387 high performance, wide input range demodulator that enables high capacity digital modems for microwave radio transmission and next-generation broadband access systems, such as 802.16 WiMAX and WiBro applications. Unlike competing and previous generations of demodulators, ADL5387 provides wideband and broadband operation with increased performance and flexibility across an input frequency that spans 50MHz to 2GHz.

High capacity modems are implemented with higher order modulation, such as OFDM and 128QAM, across wider signal bandwidths. ADL5387 addresses these requirements by integrating a highly accurate divide-by-two quadrature phase splitter with outstanding amplitude and phase balance and high-linearity Gilbert cell mixers.

The mixer cores provide high linearity—with 30dBm third order intercept (IP3) at 900MHz—and excellent demodulation accuracy with 0.1dB amplitude and 0.5-degree phase accuracy. This highly balanced design provides >60dBc LO rejection and low second order distortion, both critical specs for higher order demodulation applications. Moreover, ADL5387 features a 240MHz demodulation bandwidth. The base band output stage delivers a conversion gain of approximately 5dB and high output drive, minimising the need for auxiliary output amplifiers.

Phillip Halford, RF/IF Product Marketing Manager, ADI said, "Many new and emerging broadband and cellular telecommunications manufacturers in India are potential users of the ADL5387. These companies produce repeaters, cell site extenders, wireless local loop equipment for broadband data, and telephony services. Examples of these companies include Reliance, Shyam, and Midas, as well as many global customers that are beginning to set up a presence in India."

"In comparison to its competitors, the ADL5387 supports wider bandwidths, which enables the part to be used in higher capacity next-generation equipment as well as offer improved performance over prior generation devices. The performance improvements include higher dynamic range/linearity (input IP3 and IP2 specifications, low noise) and high output drive from the mixers" shared Phillip.

With these specifications and core attributes, ADL5387 enables the highest capacity microwave modems, simplifies design and allows operation across the widest range of input frequencies and signal bandwidths. ADL5387 is suited for use in high capacity microwave radio modems and the IF signal paths of next generation broadband wireless access systems, such as 802.16 WiMAX and WiBro applications.

Fabricated on Analog Devices' XF3 silicon-on-insulator SiGe complementary bipolar process, the ADL5387 is sampling today, and will be available in full production quantities in July. The chip is housed in a 24-lead small footprint LFCSP package with a price of Rs.210.50 ($4.98) per unit in 1000-piece quantities.
